Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 15, 2025

Thank you for choosing to use the “Grocery Genie” browser extension (the “Extension”). Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices regarding that data.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Recipe Data (User-Provided)

Ingredient lines and recipe title.

When you click “Let’s Cook!”, the Extension scrapes the active recipe page’s ingredients and title in order to package them for grocery delivery services.

Local Storage

We store your scraped recipes and your “Grocery List” in your own browser’s local storage (chrome.storage.local). This data never leaves your machine unless you explicitly send it to third-party grocery delivery service.

1.2 No Personal Identifiers

We do not collect or store your name, email address, location, browsing history (beyond the single recipe page you’re on), or any other personal identifiers.

We do not collect analytics, crash reports, or any third-party tracking.

2. How We Use Your Data

Building your Grocery List

When you click “Let's Cook!”, we merge the structured { quantity, unit, name } items into a list in your browser storage.

Grocery Delivery Integration

When you click “Head to Checkout”, we package your stored grocery-list items into the format required by third-party grocery delivery services and POST it to the provider of your choosing.

Local-only

If you never click “Head to Checkout”, none of your scraped data is transmitted outside your browser.

3. Third-Party Sharing

Grocery Delivery API

Only when you send your list to a third-party grocery delivery service do we share your recipe data (ingredients, title, instructions) with that service. No other third parties ever see your data.

Affiliate Tracking

We append our affiliate partner ID to the data sent to the grocery delivery service so that—if you complete an order—the delivery service can attribute any resulting purchase back to Grocery Genie.

4. Permissions

Our manifest.json requests the following permissions:

activeTab

To know which tab is currently active so that the popup can be displayed and the user can press "Let's cook!" on the tab.

storage

To save your recipe and grocery-list data locally.

<all_urls> & https://connect.instacart.com/*

To allow our content script to run on any recipe site and to POST to the Instacart API endpoint.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

Local Control

All data is stored in your browser’s local storage. You can clear it at any time by clicking “Clear Grocery List” in the popup or by clearing the extension’s data under Chrome’s settings (chrome://extensions → Details → Clear data).

No Backups

We do not back up or replicate your data on any server.

6. Security

We do not transmit or store any credentials or personal identifiers.

All third-party API calls use HTTPS to protect data in transit.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect new features or changes in legal requirements. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the Extension after any change indicates your acceptance of the new terms.
