Privacy Policy

Thank you for using the “Grocery Genie” browser extension (the “Extension”). Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices regarding that data.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

If you choose to sign in, we authenticate you using Clerk (our authentication provider). When authenticated, we store:

  • Your Clerk user ID (a unique identifier)

  • A short-lived session token used to authorize requests

We do not collect or store your password.

1.2 Recipe & Grocery Data

When you use the Extension, we may process:

  • Recipe URL

  • Recipe title

  • Ingredient lines

  • Structured ingredient data (quantity, unit, name)

  • Generated shopping list data

  • Instacart shopping list URL (if created)

This data is used to build your grocery list and, if you choose, create a shopping list via Instacart.

1.3 Order & Recipe History

If you are signed in, we store:

  • The most recent 15 recipes you processed

  • The most recent 10 grocery orders you created

  • Associated metadata (title, ingredient list, timestamps)

This data is stored securely in our backend database and is associated only with your Clerk user ID.

1.4 Local Browser Storage

The Extension stores certain data locally using chrome.storage.local, including:

  • Your current grocery list

  • Temporary UI state

  • Authentication session identifiers

Local storage data remains on your device unless you explicitly send a list to a grocery provider.

1.5 Support Requests

If you contact support, we collect:

  • Name

  • Email address

  • Message content

Support emails are processed via SendGrid.

1.6 Log Data

Our backend may temporarily log:

  • IP address

  • Request path

  • Timestamp

  • Error messages (if applicable)

We use this information for security, fraud prevention, and debugging. We do not use logs for advertising or behavioral tracking.

2. How We Use Your Data

We use your data to:

  • Build and manage your grocery lists

  • Generate Instacart shopping list links

  • Store limited recipe/order history (if signed in)

  • Provide customer support

  • Prevent abuse and secure our systems

We do not sell your data.

We do not use your data for targeted advertising.

3. Third-Party Services

3.1 Instacart

If you click “Head to Checkout,” we transmit your grocery list data to Instacart’s API to generate a shopping link.

Instacart processes that data under its own privacy policy.

3.2 Clerk

We use Clerk for authentication. Clerk processes authentication data under its own privacy policy.

3.3 SendGrid

We use SendGrid to send support emails.

4. Data Retention

If you are signed in:

  • We retain up to 15 recipes and 10 orders per user.

  • Older entries are automatically deleted.

If you are not signed in:

  • Data remains only in your browser’s local storage.

5. Your Rights & Data Deletion

You may delete your stored Grocery Genie data at any time:

  1. Open the Extension.

  2. Go to History.

  3. Click “Delete my Grocery Genie data.”

This permanently deletes:

  • Your stored recipe history

  • Your stored order history

  • Your associated user record in our database

This does not delete your Clerk authentication account.

You may also clear local storage via Chrome’s extension settings.

6. Security

We implement:

  • HTTPS for all data transmission

  • Short-lived authentication tokens

  • Rate limiting

  • Strict CORS allowlisting

  • Secure backend storage

  • Access control via verified JWT authentication

We do not embed API secrets in the Extension.

7. Children’s Privacy

Grocery Genie is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy periodically. We will revise the “Last updated” date accordingly.

Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
